Bovensbos en Keuperheide vormen samen een onderdeel van het uitgestrekte bosgebied van De Heldense Bossen.
Het gebied kenmerkt zich door een afwisseling van dennenbossen en kleinschalig akkerland. Aan de randen liggen op het lagere gedeelte enkele vennen, en dwars door het gebied ziet men nog de restanten van de oude landweert. Dit was een opgeworpen aarden wal beplant met doornige struiken om rondtrekkende roversbendes tegen te houden.
Midden in dit gebied ligt de hoeve en boerderijcamping Bovensbos.
