De Maasvlakte is een groot haven- en industriegebied, dat deel uit maakt van de Rotterdamse haven. Het herbergt olie, container en bulkgoed terminals, een energiecentrale en chemische industrie.
De Maasvlakte is in de eerste heft van de jaren zestig aangelegd op de plaats van het voormalige natuurreservaat De Beer - tot die tijd het grootste zeevogelreservaat van West-Europa. De Natuurbeschermingswet van 1968 kwam helaas voor behoud van dit unieke natuurgebied te laat.
In 1973 meerden de eerste schepen af. De Maasvlakte is gebouwd door het leggen van een ringdijk waarbinnen zand uit de Noordzee werd opgespoten. Dit vormt nu de bodem van de Maasvlakte. In het zand zitten nog veel fossielen. Het gebied is daarom populair bij fossielenzoekers.
