Het Lingebos is een heel jong bos. De aanleg ervan is begonnen in 1958, tijdens de ruilverkaveling van de Westelijke Tielerwaard. Naast de aanleg van natuur had het Lingebos nog twee functies: ruimte voor recreatie voor de bewoners van de Randstad en zandwinning voor de snelweg A15 en het klaverblad bij Gorinchem. Op 26 juni 1969 werd het Lingebos officieel geopend door de toenmalige prinses Beatrix. In de jaren 80 nam de interesse in recreatiegebieden af, wat resulteerde in opsplitsing van het beheer van het Lingebos. Het Lingebos bestaat nu uit twee gebieden. Het natuurgebied onder toezicht van Staatsbosbeheer en een recreatiegebied in beheer van de gemeente Lingewaal. De recreatieplas is 10 ha groot en is op sommige plaatsen wel 14 meter diep.
