Groningen uitspraak is een provincie in het noorden van Nederland met 590.234 inwoners , waarvan meer dan een derde in de gelijknamige hoofdstad Groningen woont. Naast het Nederlands is ook het Nedersaksisch erkend als officiële taal in de provincie.De provincie wordt ook wel Stad en Ommelanden genoemd, omdat historisch de stad en het omringende platteland , een gelijkwaardige positie in het gewest innamen. De drie historische Ommelander kwartieren zijn Hunsingo, Fivelingo en het Westerkwartier. De Ommelanden en het Oldambt waren tot de 15e eeuw grotendeels oorspronkelijk Fries, de stad, Gorecht en Westerwolde Saksisch. Nu worden vrijwel overal in de Ommelanden Nedersaksische dialecten gesproken. In de dorpen De Wilp, Opende, Kornhorn en Marum in het Westerkwartier wordt deels Fries gesproken.
