SC Amersfoort werd in 1973 opgericht als voortzetting van de eerste-divisieclub HVC . HVC was van oudsher de grootste club van Amersfoort, maar door de invoering van het profvoetbal en de aanschaf van spelers van buiten de stad vervreemdde de club zich van zijn achterban en raakte in de problemen. In 1973 werden de amateurtak en de professionale tak van HVC van elkaar gescheiden; de profs gingen verder als SC Amersfoort. SC Amersfoort had een bescheiden stadion op sportpark Birkhoven.
