Op het 234 hectare grote landgoed Noordhout, dat al in de 19e eeuw bebost was, liggen enkele historische akkers en staat een monumentaal jachthuis uit 1852. In die tijd bestond de omgeving uit woeste gronden. Een deel van Noordhout is aangewezen als bosreservaat en niet toegankelijk voor publiek. Hier kunnen de natuurlijke processen volledig hun gang gaan. Op 8 oktober 2013 is nabij het jachthuis het ecoduct Mollebos over de snelweg A12 en spoorlijn Utrecht - Arnhem geopend. Dieren kunnen zich zo verplaatsen tussen het zuidelijke en centrale deel van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
