Hoogwoud is een plaats die behoort tot de West-Friese gemeente Opmeer in de provincie Noord-Holland. De plaats heeft 3.940 inwoners . Hoogwoud is gelegen tussen Hoorn en Alkmaar.
In een maisveld bij Hoogwoud werd eind 2019 een Vikingring uit de 10e eeuw gevonden. De omgeving werd vanaf de 9e eeuw door de Vikingen als uitvalsbasis gebruikt.
De plaatsnaam komt in 1289 voor als Hoechhoutswouder en in 1396 als Hogherswoude. Lang werd gedacht dat de plaatsnaam ter onderscheiding was van een toen nabijgelegen Nederwoude. De oudste naam duidt er echter op dat de plaats gesitueerd was op een wat hoger gelegen woudgebied. Dit woud was moeraswoud en ondanks ontginning waren er nog veel hout, bomen of bosgedeeltes aanwezig.
