De Bonifatiuskerk behoort tot de oudste kerken van zuidoost Friesland. De kerk werd bij zijn oprichting gewijd aan Bonifatius. In een document uit 1553 wordt de kerk aangeduid als de Parochiekerk van de H.Vitus te Antiqua Bercoop in Stellingwerff. De bouw van de oudste delen van de kerk is waarschijnlijk rond het jaar 1125 voltooid.
Het oude kerkhof rondom de kerk is omgeven door een rustieke ringmuur, deze stamt waarschijnlijk uit het begin van de 17e eeuw, dezelfde periode waarin de toren na eerdere vernietiging werd hersteld.
