Dit prachtige museum vertelt het verhaal van 200 jaar tucht en Nederland. Het gevangenisdorp is ontstaan dankzij de inzet van Johannes van den Bosch. Zijn doel was de armoede bestrijden door mensen een nieuwe kans te geven in de Kolonien van Weldadigheid. Je moest je natuurlijk wel gedragen en je best doen. Om je daaraan te herinneren waren er tucht en straffen. Wat dat betekende en hoe zich dat in de loop der jaren ontwikkelde zie je in deze voormalige gevangenis.
Veenhuizen is als onderdeel van de Koloniën van Weldadigheid opgenomen in de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Op de binnenplaats van het museum is de voorstelling Het Pauperparadijs vertoond.
