De Linneuskade is eigenlijk de dijk rond de Watergraafsmeer. Dit meer is in 1629 ingepolderd. Als je vanaf de kade zuidwaarts loopt dan daal je duidelijk enkele meters af. Tot 1921 was Watergraafsmeer een zelfstandige gemeente. Eeuwenlang was de polder leeg op hier en daar een boerderij en een buitenhuis na. Vanaf 1900 werd de Watergraafsmeer steeds verder ontwikkeld voor woningbouw. Je kunt hier mooi de groeiringen aflezen: eerst de Jugendstil in de Linneusparkbuurt, dan de Amsterdamse School woningen en uiteindelijk de functionalistische woningbouw van de jaren 1950.
