Het grootste deel van het Leuvenumse Bos is voormalig stuifzandgebied, dat ruim honderd jaar geleden beplant is met grove dennen. Dit naaldbos is later geleidelijk omgevormd tot een meer gevarieerd bos. Het zandige verleden kunt u goed herkennen aan de opgestoven hoogtes en aan de uitgestoven laagtes die in het bos voorkomen en aan de jeneverbesstruwelen die verspreid in het bos voorkomen. In het bos komen verder karakteristieke planten voor als bosbes, vossenbes en hulst, dophei, struikhei, dalkruid en veel korstmossen.
