Deze toren vormt samen met de hoge vuurtoren van Westkapelle een lichtenlijn. Als een schipper de lichten van deze twee torens in één lijn houdt, vaart hij zonder problemen naar en door het Oostgat. Deze vuurtoren is de eerste ronde gietijzeren toren in Nederland. Het maken van de segmenten voor een ronde toren was moeilijker dan voor een hoekige toren, omdat de mallen waarin het ijzer gegoten werd met de hand van hout gemaakt moesten worden.
