Tijdens het vroege 16e eeuw bracht koning Sigismund I (Krol Zygmunt I in het Pools) en zijn vrouw de beste binnenlandse en buitenlandse artiesten, waaronder Italiaanse architecten en beeldhouwers, en Duitse decorateurs, bijeen om het schitterende renaissanc paleis te creëren.
