Danzig behoorde sinds de Tweede Poolse Deling tot het koninkrijk Pruisen. Van 1807 tot 1814 was het als vrije stad ) een napoleontische vazalstaat. Het Congres van Wenen kende Danzig in 1814 weer aan Pruisen toe, waarin het hoofdstad werd van de provincie West-Pruisen . Sinds 1871 behoorde de stad met geheel Pruisen tot het nieuwe Duitse Keizerrijk.
