De hedendaagse dorpen zijn hier vermoedelijk ontstaan tijdens de herkolonisatie na de Reconquista in de late 12e en vroege 13e eeuw.
Met de territoriale hervorming van 2013 werd de gemeente São Simão opgeheven en samengevoegd met de twee stadsgemeenten van Nisa, Nossa Senhora da Graça en Espírito Santo.
