De Praça da República wordt in de volksmond gewoon Arcada genoemd.
Het plein werd in de late middeleeuwen aangelegd. De naam Arcada komt van de arcade die daar in 1715 op initiatief van D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles werd gebouwd. Sinds het einde van de 16e eeuw werden hier de goederen verkocht die de stad bevoorraadden. Halverwege de 19e eeuw werd de ruimte omgevormd tot een openbare tuin.
De bouw van het huidige arcadegebouw, ontworpen door gemeentelijk ingenieur Joaquim Pereira da Cruz , werd in 1885 voltooid .
De meest recente ingreep op het plein vond plaats tussen juni 1994 en juli 1995, toen het verkeer op het plein werd afgesloten en er een lichtfontein werd geïnstalleerd .
Op het plein vindt u de Lapa-kerk en twee eeuwenoude, iconische cafés in de stad: Café Vianna en Astória .
