La Praça da República es llamada popularmente simplemente Arcada .
La plaza fue construida a finales de la Edad Media . El nombre de Arcada proviene de la arcada que se construyó allí en 1715 por iniciativa de D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles. Desde finales del siglo XVI , aquí se vendían las mercancías que abastecían a la ciudad . A mediados del siglo XIX, el espacio se transformó en jardín público .
La construcción del actual edificio de soportales, obra del ingeniero municipal Joaquim Pereira da Cruz, se concluyó en 1885.
La última intervención en la plaza tuvo lugar entre junio de 1994 y julio de 1995, cuando se cerró el tráfico en la plaza y se instaló una fuente luminosa .
En la plaza se encuentran la Iglesia de Lapa y dos cafés centenarios e icónicos de la ciudad: Café Vianna y Astória.
