Die Praça da República wird im Volksmund einfach Arcada genannt.
Der Platz wurde am Ende des Mittelalters angelegt . Der Name Arcada geht auf die Arkaden zurück, die dort im Jahr 1715 auf Initiative von Herrn errichtet wurden. Rodrigo de Moura Teles. Seit Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden hier Waren zur Versorgung der Stadt verkauft . Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde der Platz in einen öffentlichen Garten umgewandelt .
Der Bau des aktuellen Vorbaus, ein Werk des Stadtingenieurs Joaquim Pereira da Cruz, wurde 1885 abgeschlossen.
Der letzte Eingriff auf dem Platz erfolgte zwischen Juni 1994 und Juli 1995, als der Platz für den Verkehr gesperrt und ein leuchtender Brunnen installiert wurde.
Auf dem Platz befinden sich die Lapa-Kirche und zwei jahrhundertealte und legendäre Cafés der Stadt: Café Vianna und Astória.
