De Slag bij Poltava in Zuid-Rusland vond plaats op 8 juli 1709 en markeert het keerpunt in de Grote Noordse Oorlog. De 19e-eeuwse Britse historicus Edward Creasy rekende de Slag bij Poltava onder de vijftien meest beslissende veldslagen in de wereld.
Koning Karel XII van Zweden had de Poolse koning August de Sterke volledig verslagen en ook diens bondgenoot tsaar Peter de Grote van Rusland in de slag bij Narva afgestraft. Vervolgens liet hij zich verleiden tot een aanval op het hart van Rusland.
