Fort Mackinac is een gekende plaats in de geschiedenis van het geneeskundig onderzoek. Hier werd in 1822 soldaat Alexis St.Martin verwond met een kogel in de maag. Arts William Beaumont kon hem oplappen, maar het gat bleef in zijn buikwand zitten. "Een schitterende opportuniteit" vond de arts om experimenten uit te voeren met maagsappen. Hij sloot zelfs een contract af met zijn patient zodat hij blijvend wetenschappelijk onderzoek kon doen via het gat in zijn maag.
