De eerste moordpoging op Johannes Paulus II vond plaats op woensdag 13 mei 1981, op het Sint-Pietersplein. Mehmet Ali Ağca schoot vier keer op de paus terwijl deze het plein binnenging. Door de ernstige schoten verloor de paus veel bloed en moest hij worden opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Ağca werd meteen gearresteerd en door een Italiaanse rechtbank tot levenslang veroordeeld. Later vergaf de paus Ağca voor zijn moordpoging. De Italiaanse president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi verleende op verzoek van de paus gratie aan Ağca, waarna hij in juni 2000 naar Turkije werd gedeporteerd.
