Met zijn negen bogen is het Nine Arches Viaduct één van de belangrijkste technische prestaties van de Derwent Valley Railway. Het viaduct is ruim 150 meter lang en werd gebouwd omdat de Earl of Strathmore geen toestemming wilde verlenen om de spoorlijn over zijn landgoed Gibside Estate te laten lopen.
