De heuvels in deze regio waren tot begin deze eeuw bedekt met pinhals, dennebomen. Het merendeel daarvan is gekapt voor gebruik in de papierindustrie. Daarna is men grotendeels overgegaan op de aanplant van eucalyptus, dat na 10 jaar weer gekapt wordt, ook voor verwerking tot papier. Het voordeel is dat de eucalyptus vanzelf weer groeit, waar de pinhal heraangeplant moet worden na de kap. Goot nadeel van de eucalyptus is dat dit een echte waterverslinder is, niet echt een goede keus voor een regio die in toenemende mate zal gaan verdrogen.
