De Macote is de bakermat van de internationaal bekende Pogiboys en een uniek Vlaams supportersverhaal.
Zelfs The New York Times schreef het verhaal op van de magazijnier uit Wervik, stichter van de Pogiboys en superfan van misschien wel de grootste wielrenner aller tijden.
Pieter Lelong en Jens Ugille vormen samen met Mahieu en diens vader de kern van de supportersclub, al hadden ze een jaartje meer nodig, en Pogi’s spectaculaire eerste Tourwinst in 2020, om Pogacar als wielermessias te omarmen. Ook Nick Pauwels die als ‘belleman’ met zijn iconische kostuum en ronkende stem overal de aandacht trekt, maakt deel uit van het bestuur. Hij wachtte wel tot rit 5 van de Tour 2022, een kasseirit langs onder meer de verminkte Pont Gibus, om zich tot de Pogi-cultus te bekeren.
