Pommard is one of those legendary appellations of the Côte d'Or (Côte de Beaune). The appellation is nestled between the wine regions of Beaune (to the north) and Volnay (to the south). As a result, it has always had a somewhat flattered reputation, which sometimes came across as negative. In the Pommard AOC or Pommard Premier Cru AOC, only red wines are produced. 28 climats are classified as Premier Cru.
To the north, the most famous Premiers Crus bear names such as Grands Epenots, Petits Epenots, and, higher up the slope, Les Pezerolles. To the south, we find the remarkable Premier Cru Les Rugiens with their richness, intensity, and unmatched power. One might wonder why the appellation does not yet have a Grand Cru. Many of these remarkable wines indeed possess, according to numerous insiders, enough assets for such recognition.
