Since the 11th century, the massive castle has crowned the village of Gordes. Guillaume d'Agoult, from a powerful noble family, mentions the castle in a charter from 1031. His descendants will further expand the castle. During the religious wars, it successfully withstood the attacks of Baron des Adrets. Later, the castle passed into the hands of the Marquis of Simiane, the Dukes of Souvisen, and in the 18th century, it came into the possession of the Princes of Condé.
In the middle of the 14th century, a wall was also built around the village. This is a consequence of the fear felt by the population since the Hundred Years' War.
In the square on the south side of the castle stands a fountain from 1342, which for a long time was the only place where the villagers could get their water.
Further south stands the church of Saint Firmin. The church dates back to the 18th century. The square bell tower from the 14th century was formerly a belfry and has an exterior staircase. At its foot used to lie the old prison.
Next to the church on Rue du Four stands the Palace of Saint Firmin. Its gardens and cellars have led to it being declared a protected monument.
After our visit, we drive out of the village along the north side. The climb goes straight up opposite the castle.
