Saint Gillis Chapel

Description

The chapel is a relay on the old "road to Saint-Gilles," which is the fourth largest pilgrimage in the West (after Rome and Santiago de Compostela). Encouraged by the abbot of Saint-Hubert, Thierry 1 (1055-1086), the cult of Saint Gilles was introduced in the former diocese of Liège. It seems that the Liège route originated around 1080. There may have already been a building on the site that was then called "Kalveheis." Before the French Revolution, the Saint Gilles chapel was part of the church of Rahier, which belonged to Bodeux and the Principality of Stavelot. In 1803, it was added to the parish of Chevron. Above the front door is the year 1801, the year in which the annex was added. Saint Gilles is invoked to heal nerve and childhood diseases. On September 1 and the following Sunday, the relic was honored. Mothers would come in large numbers with their children to bring them under the protection of the saint. There is still local festivity around this period even today. The Saint Gilles chapel and its surroundings have inspired several artists, including Richard Heintz and Elysée Fabry. Between the chapel and the road to Bodeux lies a wide path called "La Levée." This is believed to be an ancient Roman road. In the past, one could reach Stavelot via this road. The chapel was classified in 1944. In 1964, the pastor of Chauveheid, Belgium, accepted a check for $1 from Canada, from George H. Hambley Melita (Manitoba - Canada). He accompanied the cavalry regiment "Canadian Light Horse" in 1918, who were in the area. This unit camped in Chauveheid, and one of the riders went into the chapel and took a 5 franc coin from there. Nearly 50 years later, Abbot George H. Hambley wanted to rectify this matter and therefore offered the check.
