Sandstone has been mined in the county of Bentheim since the 11th and 12th centuries. In the heyday of the county, the prince of Bentheim and Steinfurt owned no fewer than 22 quarries.
Today, sandstone is still mined in two places in the county of Bentheim. In the quarry at the Romberg in Gildehaus, Monser extracts the beige-coloured sandstone with the brand name "Gildehaus" from the ground. Sandstone is quarried considerably less often in the quarry at the open-air theatre in Bentheim. Sandstone of the "Bentheim" type is mined here, which has a characteristic reddish colour.
What used to be heavy and time-consuming manual work, we now take care of with technical know-how and "heavy" equipment. First, holes are drilled in the ground that are filled with expansion concrete. After the concrete has been laid out, heavy excavators remove the broken stone blocks, weighing up to 25 tonnes, from the quarry for transport to our workshop in Nordhorn.
