With the establishment of a church organization, the first parishes in the Münsterland were founded. Thus, the parish of St. Laurentius also looks back on a long history. The actual age of the parish in Senden remains unknown due to the lack of historical sources. Church historians assume that the first parish in Senden was founded in the first half of the 11th century (after 1023). For the first time, the Senden parish was mentioned in a document in 1188, which stated that the care of the Senden parish was entrusted to the provost of the St. Martini monastery in Münster in 1187.
The new parish was most likely established on the bishop's main estate, which had been acquired through purchase or exchange from the Werden monastery. The patron of the parish as well as the first parish church was St. Laurentius, a Roman deacon during the time of Pope Sixtus II. Legend has it that Laurentius was martyred on a fiery gridiron for distributing the church treasure to the poor and the sick against the will of Emperor Valerian. Around the newly established parish church, craftsmen and tradespeople gradually settled.
