Many workers from the Schüttorf textile factories could not afford a cow, but they could afford a goat. But where to put the goats? They had to be kept at a safe distance, because of their smell. Thus, in 1907, the goat farm was built just outside the settlement.
As stubborn as the goats may be, in Schüttorf the useful pets have been given a "monument", in the middle of the town in front of the town hall. A woman pulls and drags her goats over the bridge with great difficulty. The "Woman with Goats" symbolizes a longer period of Schüttorf's city history, in which goats played an important role in the supply of the population. They were exceptionally good recyclers of leftovers and provided milk, butter, cheese and meat for many even in times of need. At that time, the self-evident image of everyday life included goat farmers who were on their way to the municipal breeding station. This was located out of town in Fichtenstraße.
The sculpture was created by the Osnabrück sculptor Hans Gerd Ruwe (1926-1995) and opened to the public on 25.09.1993 in the course of the renovation of the city centre of Schüttorf.
