Kuurne is van oudsher verbonden met het water. De connectie met de Leie ging echter in de loop van de tijd verloren. Nu wordt geprobeerd om de Leie opnieuw beter zichtbaar en voelbaar te maken. De Leiemeersen - aan de monding van de Heulebeek in de Leie - vormen één van de laatste grote open ruimtegebieden in de Leievallei binnen het stedelijk gebied van Kortrijk.
