In de 13de eeuw bouwden cisterciënzermonniken de Sint-Bernardusabdij in Hemiksem. Met de Franse Revolutie werden de monniken verdreven. De abdij werd nationaal goed en fungeerde als maritiem hospitaal, gevangenis en militair depot. In het kader van het Sigmaplan werd de Benedenvliet afgesloten van de Schelde en werd op de monding een uitwateringssluis en wachtbekken aangelegd. Voordien was de Vliet lange tijd een belangrijke waterloop en bevaarbaar tot Cleydaal. Luister en vaar mee met de 17de-eeuwse monnik Servaes in een verhaal van Arnd Van Meirvenne.
