Coach House Ter Horst

South of the main building stands a COACH HOUSE with ORANGERY belonging to the estate Ter Horst. According to a façade and coat of arms stone, the brick outbuilding was built in 1701 on the orders of Mr. Frederik Sluysken. The orangery was built in 1767 on the orders of Mr. Iman Cau, for which the adjacent barn was probably reduced in size. A design drawing by P. Post shows the building without the orangery.

Description

The structure, based on an irregularly shaped rectangular foundation, consists of three building bodies, namely a coach house and a barn under two saddle roofs covered with Old Dutch tiles with a valley, and the later added orangery under a gable roof covered with Old Dutch tiles. The symmetrically arranged front façade features a centrally framed access door with the year 'MDCCI' above which is a richly decorated coat of arms stone with a pediment and festoons. In the roof slope is a dormer with multiple panes. On either side of the access door is a door assembly formed by two paired double doors. In the wall above are oeuil-de-boeufs, set in a natural stone frame. In the side façade, construction traces are visible, one window axis with a four-pane window, a shutter with multiple-pane transom and a framed oeuil-de-boeuf. The shutter is flanked by natural stone decorations. In the side façade of the adjacent barn is a door. The symmetrically arranged front façade of the orangery has five window axes with centrally the double access door with outward-opening transoms featuring a cross-shaped grid. On either side are large eight-pane windows. Against the east façade stands an old mulberry tree.

Appreciation

COACH HOUSE with ORANGERY is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural historical value as a typologically intact example of an 18th-century coach house with orangery. In addition, the outbuilding has ensemble value due to its functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the estate, particularly through its location at the front square and as part of the 18th-century garden layout.
