A drowned forest is a forest that has been flooded by an elevated water level or a flood. If the trees are in the water for a long time, the trees usually die. Sometimes the stumps (the root system and the base of the trunk) are covered with sediment and are preserved as fossils. If, later, the sediment under which the remains of the forest are buried disappears due to natural causes or human activity, the stumps will be released again. If many such stumps are found together, it is called a 'drowned forest'.
