In the middle of the meadows, but exceptionally close to the road, we see a typical farm. The rich orchard, where cows used to graze, is a short distance from the house. For fresh vegetables, you only have to step out of the kitchen door, right into the varied vegetable garden. In the open landscape, the road is bordered on both sides by hedges, man-high, densely overgrown, and with plenty of hawthorn. In the meadow, we see a striking number of light purple 'bachelor's button' (Knautia arvensis). This flower is called 'widow flower' in English and 'Witwenblume' in German; both mean 'widow flower'. Some may recognize something in this plan, as the dark purple knautia macedonica is often planted in our gardens. The dirt road transitions to asphalt, and you have to pay close attention to see the deep ravine we are crossing. Is this a natural incision? Or is it the extended bottom of the aqueduct from Gileppe to Verviers?
