TREE OF THE YEAR 2021
The giant sequoia is the symbol of the former Saint-Joseph college, now known as Notre-Dame de Bonlieu college.
It stands at the main entrance of the building and has seen thousands of students pass by on their way to school. This majestic tree is also the setting for several group photos and is depicted in a comic strip by an iconic author from Gaume, Jean-Claude Servais.
For Virton, the giant sequoia is an important tree because in the past it provided the city with a magnificent view, but today only a few remain: the tree in Foncin park, the mayor's tree, Mr. Culot's, and of course the college tree.
On the site, other trees deserve attention: a remarkable linden, an imposing purple beech, a historic orchard from the agricultural school maintained and rejuvenated by the teaching team, walnut and hazelnut trees, and a young hedge planted by the students in 2020 to promote biodiversity around the college.
