Historical farms Vanneste & Verhelle

The old farms at Vageweenstraat 10 and 8 certainly date back to the mid-19^th century and possibly even earlier.
The first farm you encounter, at house number 10, belongs to Vanneste. There is a preserved wall stone from 1858 that indicates renovations at that time. The Beeuwsaert –
De Costere family, who lived and worked in these farms, threatened to go bankrupt in the mid-19^th century. Immediately, they had a small chapel built to implore God for help. This so-called 'Vanneste chapel' still stands at the intersection of Vageweenstraat and Hondsmertjesstraat, a few meters to the right on Hondsmertjesstraat. However, the current 'Vanneste chapel' dates from 1967 and actually conceals a transformation center for natural gas.

The Verhelle farm, Vageweenstraat 8, is situated a bit lower than street level. Old maps, such as the Atlas der Buurtwegen from 1841, show that the farm used to be fully surrounded by a moat.

Stad Izegem
