Long ago, Castle Schaesberg was one of the most beautiful castles in the region. Built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on a medieval predecessor, it was for centuries the pride of the Lords of Schaesberg.
An example of architecture from the Maasland Renaissance. Here, people lived, dined, and held meetings on topics that would change the map of the Lands of Overmaas.
In the eighteenth century, when hunger and poverty prevailed and the notorious Bokkenrijders committed their crimes, members of that gang were locked up in the cellars. Waiting for a trial that would lead them to the gallows.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the uninhabited castle gradually deteriorated. The castle farm remained in use by generations of farmers, but was demolished in the late sixties.
