In the Rijselstraat, the main street of Menen, the inhabitants of Menen first met the Germans on October 4, 1914. The first Uhlans arrived in the city.
During the occupation, there were both religious services for Catholics and Protestants in the church. After a Protestant service, the pastor went around the church with a swish and holy water vat to disinfect it.
At the height of restaurant L'époque, there was a German guard booth erected in the colors red-black-white.
In the Rijselstraat there was also a mess for officers and at number 63 was the house of the "Ortskommandant."
