If you look slantwise towards the east, you have a beautiful panorama of the Famenne depression. This depression is lower because this area is largely made up of slate (or schist), which erodes and crumbles very easily. You can find numerous places nearby where that slate is exposed (like at the castle of Villers), and then you can feel that crumbly structure for yourself. The majority of those softer layers have thus been washed away (among other things by the Lesse that you see lying here). The heavily eroded valley was filled again by the alluvium of the Lesse.
If you look over the valley of the Lesse and the Lomme, you see a higher horizon rising in the distance. Those are the "real" Ardennes. Because colloquially we also call this area the Ardennes, but it is actually still the Famenne.
