We are at the IJse. This is a river that originates in the Sonian Forest in Sint Genius-Rode. The IJse then flows through Hoeilaart, Overijse, Huldenberg, and Loonbeek before finally merging into the Dijle in Neerijse. The IJse valley is characterized by many springs, often located at the transition between the valley and the slope. The valley is filled with clay and loam material and lies on the clay of Kortrijk. The water layer that feeds the springs is located in the Brussels sand. At the top of the plateau, there are fertile loam soils that are well-suited for agriculture. These lie on the Brussels sand.
According to Flemish standards, the IJse has a lot of drop and the valley walls are steep. Walking to the willow (which is a lime tree), we experienced this firsthand.
In Flemish Brabant, this is one of the least polluted rivers with many fish such as the brook trout, river loach, and dace.
