Veluwe

This route is plotted in the sandy landscape of the central Netherlands. The route runs through the moraine landscape of the Veluwe and the northern IJssel valley.
Moraines are often kilometers wide, tens of kilometers long and up to many tens of meters high ridges that largely consist of older river sands that were pushed up in the penultimate ice age (Saalien) for the glacier front. Nowadays they are mostly overgrown with forests.
In the last ice age (Weichselien) there was no land ice in the Netherlands, but there was a subarctic climate. The soil was permanently frozen (permafrost) and there was little or no plant growth. Due to icy sandstorms, layers of deck sand were deposited. Due to the blowing up of deck sand, locally kilometres of low deck sand ridges have been formed, which are now mostly overgrown with coniferous forest. Local drifting sand areas were also created.
The tour starts and ends at the Kootwijkerduin car park at the beginning of the Nieuw Milligenseweg (A1 exit 18 Kootwijk).
