The Black Forest is a forest-rich area and low mountain range in the southwest of Germany, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, by the Rhine and near the French border.

It is the largest low mountain range in Germany. Geologically, it is related to the Vosges Mountains, which are located on the French side of the Rhine. The highest peak of the Black Forest is the Feldberg, with an elevation of 1493 meters.

The Black Forest is the largest forest area in Germany and mainly consists of pine and spruce trees. Today, the Black Forest is one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany. A small part in the north is protected as the Black Forest National Park.

The Romans called the densely wooded mountain range with its distinctive dark coniferous trees Silva Nigra - "the black or dark forest or impenetrable forest," which was threatening and almost impenetrable to them. The German word "Schwarzwald" was used for the first time in a document from the Swiss monastery of St. Gallen in the year 868.

A well-known tourist route is the Black Forest High Road, the B 500, and the Clock Route. The Black Forest is globally famous for the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
