Avoid Locarno on the road and not through the tunnel (Galleria), which is very long, very hot, and very polluted. Then the Cento Valli, a winding road where it is better to let the local cars pass, as they know the road better than their pocket. Then the Simplon and finally the return via the highway, to avoid ending up at night. 1:00 PM drive ;-))
