On the surface, the urbanized Heerlen is interspersed with green areas filled with traces from the Middle Ages and the mining era. Between the fourteenth century and the nineteenth century, it was rural here, with farms, mills, churches, and castles scattered throughout the landscape. One ruler followed another. When the 'mine barons' arrived, everything changed drastically, but old farms and castles often received a new purpose instead of deteriorating further. Workers' neighborhoods arose and new heritage was created.
