This varied walking route of over 7 kilometers takes you from the cozy center of Nieuwstadt past unique heritage sites and beautiful border landscapes. Thanks to the clear walking junctions, the route is easy to follow. You will soon pass the Neo-Gothic Maria Chapel from 1858, a notable white building with a characteristic Gothic arch. The impressive St. John the Baptist Church, of which the oldest parts date back to the 13th century, is also well worth a visit. At the southern edge of Nieuwstadt lies Huize Witham, a stately mansion built on the remains of a medieval castle. Along the way, you will pass the historic Brewery Kruijen, which gained fame in Central and Southern Limburg from 1785. The route then crosses the border to the German Millen. Here you can admire the centuries-old St. Nicholas Church, which has shaped the village image since the 10th century. Next to the church, you will find the House of the West Border, where the special history of the Selfkant and the Dutch-German border comes to life. Along the way, you can enjoy a varied setting of historical buildings, quiet roads, and the characteristic border landscape. This route is recommended for walkers who enjoy combining nature, culture, and history.
