GR 122 Scheldeland

The GR 122 starts in Hulst and presents the vast polder landscapes of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The fortification lines along the way are silent witnesses to the 80 Years War. You cross the border after 25 km and enter the Zoete Waasland from Reynaert de Vos to Moerbeke. Between convex fields, the Moervaart takes you from Lokeren to Lochristi. The fields of azaleas and begonias evoke colorful blankets on the fields of this flowery region. In Laarde, you will be joined by the GR 128. From Wetteren, the Scheldt takes you further west to Melle and Merelbeke. The gently hilly Land van Rode is a prelude to the Zwalm region, where windmills and watermills bear witness to the past. You follow the picturesque river upstream to the spring forests of Brakel. The hills of the Flemish Ardennes are on your way and offer you the most beautiful panoramas. You cross the Brakelbos, the Muziekbos and finally the Kluisbos. Here, the GR 122 connects to the GRP 123 Tour of Picardy Wallonia. From Bernissart in Wallonia, the GR 122 again chooses its own route. It crosses the border near Bon-Secours to join the GR 12 near Son after 470 km via Valenciennes, the fortified town of Le Quesnoy, the forest of Mormal, Avesnois and the French Ardennes.
