In 2019 it was 75 years ago that Limburg was liberated from the German occupation during the Second World War. This war has also left its mark in Kerkrade. Traces that are still visible: the tightly guarded border with Germany in the Nieuwstraat, places where bombers crashed and several war graves.

Furthermore, the route takes you past the Indies monument, with all the names of Kerkraadaren who died during the Second World War, and Schacht Nulland, a former mine shaft where the Kerkraad mining past is revived. Schacht Nulland is open on Wednesday morning. Guided tours are possible via this link by appointment.

Via this route you walk along these places full of history and memory. You will learn more about Kerkrade during the Second World War and perhaps look at the city with different eyes afterwards. The route starts at the VVV Service Point (HuB Kerkrade, Theaterplein 30 in Kerkrade) and is not signposted!
