Description by the author

Wandering through the streets with picturesque cobblestones and charming houses, you feel like you are in the Middle Ages in Limbourg. The views here are also magnificent and unspoiled. Refreshing!

Text and photo Mark Dedapper

Between the Land of Herve and the Ardennes, the splendid village of Limbourg has been perched on a hill for over 900 years, 80 meters above the Vesder valley. This former capital of the old Duchy of Limbourg has preserved its architectural heritage well: the cobblestone village square, the alleyways, the charming 18th-century houses adorned with flowers, and the church with its picturesque cemetery ensured that Limbourg was included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. You walk through a magnificent landscape with grand panoramas over sometimes steep country roads and paths, across meadows that clearly bear the marks of the Land of Herve. A quiet, soothing walk.

The route

Are you coming by train? The stop is at Dolhain-Gileppe station (1) - approach 0.7 km. Exit the station on the side of track 2. Cross the cobblestone road. An asphalt path goes diagonally up to the right, then immediately a gravel road to the right. At T, turn left and continue straight to Place Léon d’Andrimont in Dolhain (V). Head towards the monument and bridge over the Vesder. After 50 meters, on the rising road, turn left. At Y, take the right rising fork. Across from the little castle, take the cobblestone road to the left towards the center of Limbourg (2). At the water pump, take the right under the passage. Cross the road and take the path along the old fortification wall diagonally to the right. At the road, turn right, and after 50 meters, turn right again. Past a pond at X with a bench and information board, turn left. At X, turn right and immediately left (Voie d’amis) - a nice sometimes steep rocky path (slippery in rain). Just before the meadow gate, take the narrow path to the right (GR signs). Through a turnstile, you enter a meadow that you cross to the next gate. At the bus stop, cross the road and go straight, up the steps (GR). You will go through four more turnstiles (GR). After the last gate, leave the GR signs and follow the field road to the left. After 50 meters at the bench, go right. After another 50 meters (information board) take the gently rising road to the right. At the fork 200 meters further, take the rising path to the right. After 300 meters, a hairpin turn and another 300 meters further at Y, turn left. After 600 meters, just before a farm and between two rows of trees, turn left through an inconspicuous stepping stone into the meadow. Cross straight over towards the riding school and cross another meadow. At the end, through the gate and left on the field road. Through a white gate, you will return to the meadows. Now go from gate to gate, marked with a red rectangle, until shortly past the fifth gate you reach a gravel path – turn right. At Y, go straight, along the arboretum with picnic tables (3). At T, turn right and after 30 meters left - view of Goé church (4). At the next T, turn left and immediately take the field road (wayside cross) to the right. At T (farm), turn left and 50 meters further, turn right past the barrier (GR). Next to an old wall, take the narrow path to the right along the wall. At the road, turn right. You will enter Limbourg again. Go straight across the central square until you reach asphalt - turn right. Just past the cemetery and the monument with a crown, take the narrow path with steps sometimes steep downwards. At the road along the Vesder, turn left. You will join the main road – go straight. At the end of the street, turn right over the Vesder and left towards the parking lot. The train travelers follow Rue Joseph Wauters. In the bend, follow the gravel road diagonally to the right until you reach the station.
