Vierves-sur-Viroin is a district of Viroinval and is located in the valley of the Viroin. The village is listed among the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia'. During the walk, you can also enjoy beautiful views.
In Nismes, at the confluence of l’Eau Blanche and l’Eau Noire, the Viroin is born. From here, the little river meanders to its mouth, 22 km further, into the Maas. On the south side of the river, we find extensive Ardennes forests. On the north side, the limestone hills of the Calestienne. Orchids and some remarkable geological phenomena, such as the Fondry des Chiens in Nismes, are the highlights here. About six villages located along the Viroin form the entity Viroinval. Among these, Vierves-sur-Viroin is undoubtedly the most captivating village in the valley. It is not for nothing that it belongs to the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia'. The imposing castle, the church, and the traditional houses in the market square create a stunning picture.

The route
The starting point is Place Albert 1. Leave the square and take the slanted street to the left (Roche Madoux) upwards. At no. 14, leave the paved road. Keep straight and follow this narrow path until a busy road. Be careful when crossing. On the opposite side, turn right along the container park and some sheds. Past the last building, turn left. Ascending asphalt road, Chemin du Transoy. Ignore the side road to the left. The road makes a sharp turn to the right. At the height of a mobile phone mast, you come back to open terrain. Keep straight towards a new section of forest. At the intersection (with a sign for maximum width 8 m), turn left. Follow this road for quite some time. At the fork (with a RAVeL L156 sign), keep straight, gently descending. A little further at a wooden post, turn left into the forest (indication blue-white-blue). Ignore all side roads and keep walking gently downhill towards the Viroin valley. You reach the point La Haute Roche where you have a beautiful view of the village of Dourbes. Follow the blue-white-blue indication. After a steep section, you reach the roadway again. Turn left. Follow the road towards the picnic area, where you see the Viroin for the first time. Continue walking next to the river, and after a while the path turns away from the Viroin. At the next fork, keep to the left. At the stone cross, keep straight. A little further at an intersection, near a post and a tree with markers, turn left. Walk straight (yellow diamond). You enter open terrain where the road turns to the right. At the T-intersection (standalone house), turn right. Past 2 mailboxes, turn left (yellow diamond). You quickly descend to Olloy-sur-Viroin. Cross the busy road and via a bridge, you enter Olloy. Immediately after the bridge, turn left. At the second side street, turn right, Rue de l’ancienne Mairie. At the T-intersection at the chapel, turn left. At the next T-intersection, again turn left. Past the cemetery. At a picnic area, the road makes a sharp turn, ascending to the right. You cross an old railway line and shortly thereafter at the fork, turn left. From now on, follow the red-yellow signs, so you always stay with the Viroin. After a beautiful view of the castle, turn left at the road. At the next fork, turn left upwards. At no. 21, take the stairs on the left upwards and thus back to the starting point.
